The UNDP-SIWI Water Governance Facility (WGF) is a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), initiated in 2005. With an emphasis on governance, as a way to resolve root causes of water-related problems, the WGF supports sustainable development and integrated management of water resources for the achievement of social, economic and environmental objectives, and implements and promotes related programmes and projects, and furthers cooperation and partnership at all levels in order to help to achieve internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The main role of WGF is to support UNDP with water governance-specific knowledge and expertise; WGF personnel are SIWI employees that seamlessly support WOGP’s endeavours. In this partnership, UNDP accesses SIWI’s global policy-related water knowledge, which complements UNDP’s development work and helps oversee programmes run out of UNDP country offices. The other way around, the UNDP partnership permits SIWI’s knowledge and policy advice to have a global reach and avenues for implementation in practice through a set of UNDP programmes.
