Globally, child mortality has declined from 12.7 million per year to around 6 million since 1990. However, many challenges remain, particularly for the most disadvantaged children. For example, children from the poorest families are two times as likely to die before the age of five. Many of them due to diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
UNICEF work to achieve sustained use of safe water and sanitation services, adoption of hygiene practices and strengthened systems for a clean and safe environment for girls and boys, particularly the most disadvantaged and those affected by humanitarian crisis.
